Summer Tanager

On occasion, even in the middle of a scorching summer day, a subject will present you with an opportunity right where you need it.

Wandering Glider

I don't recall ever seeing these guys perch, but this one stayed hovering in one place long enough for me to focus on it..

Buildings from the slave period and earlier are scattered throughout this private island.  Ongoing research and archeology are supported by the Museum of Natural History and the Edward J Noble Foundation.  The Noble family bought the island in 1943
Gemmed Satyr

Documenting and photographing the butterflies of St Catherines was the reason I was on the island, but the wealth of other opportunities caught my attention as well.

Marbled Godwit

These shorebirds only rarely show up in summer on Georgia's barrier islands.  I had to shoo this from a long distance, at the glare of the morning sun in the East.  Needless to say it took some Photoshopping to get it presentable

In this shot you can just see the rufous color under the wing.  According to Sibley that and the barring on the flanks in the shot on the left would suggest a non-breeding adult as opposed to aan early migrant.
This shot of Wood Stork at the rookeries of the borrow pits came out of the camera with a color cast on the belly.  When I corrected for that in Photoshop it turned the sky a little purple.  I had to tinker with the color to get it right.
