The Skidaway Island Fishing Derby

The birds seem to know just when the lagoons are swarming with bait fish, and the scene will slow all the traffic on the road.  I was grumbling this morning since I could not get out at daybreak, and now I am glad I didn't.  I might have missed this event.
Nothing says Snowy Egret like those feet
These shots illustrate the opportunities when there are a gazillion birds around.  But, I saved only 9 of the 121 shots I took this morning.  Without a 5 frame per second burst rate I could have come home with nothing at all.

One of the true hurdles in photographing white birds against a dark background is retaining detail in the white plumage - called clipping or blowout when it is lost.  Some of these shots were underexposed by 1-1/2 stops.

I thought I'd throw these in since they are nemesis birds and I want to gloat.  Getting a Northern Waterthrush to come to pishing is relatively easy.  Getting them close enough and still enough to get a clear shot is another thing entirely.  This is at least my sixth attempt to photograph this species.  Getting the Gray-cheeked was pure serendipity.  I was sure it was Swainson's until I started processing the shot.  This is only the third record in Chatham County in 10 years and the only image to my knowledge.
