Directions to Savannah pelagic trips

Getting to Savannah:

From the Atlanta area take I 75 South to Macon.  Continue on through the city of Macon to I 16.  Take I 16 into Savannah.  It is 4 1/2 to 5 hours depending upon which side of town you live on.  If you are arriving from Florida or the Brunswick area drive to Exit 99 on I95 which is I16. It is about 2 hours from the Florida line to this point and another 30 - 45 minutes to Tybee .

For those of you driving straight through, turn off I 16 at exit 165, Abercorn and 37th St. Turn left onto 37th Street.  This is also Highway 204, and there is a sign to Fort Pulaski  - which you will pass on the way to the dock.  Continue on 37th Street about 1 mile until you come to Abercorn.  Turn right on Abercorn and drive about ˝ mile to Victory.  Turn left (east) on Victory (Highway 80), where you will see another sign for Fort Pulaski.  Stay on Victory for about 12 miles, passing over the Wilmington River at Thunderbolt, past Williams Seafood at Bull River and Fort Pulaski until you cross Lazaretto Creek on to Tybee Island.  Alternately, check Amick’s web-site, www.amicksdeepseafishing.com and use their directions. The creek is NOT marked from the Savannah side.   Watch for the Café Loco sign immediately after the bridge on Tybee Island and turn right. The boat is located behind the Café Loco. We will leave the dock between 6:30 and  7:00A.M. in winter.

If you experience problems my cell phone number is 912-398-6643.

Where to stay:

For those of you planning on staying over, Tybee Island clearly offers the closest lodgings.  Next would be downtown Savannah. The least expensive lodging is at Exit 94 on I 95 just south of the city.  There are several chain motels there. In the morning you need only drive 5 miles north on I95 to I 16 and following the directions above.

Many people usually stay at one of several motels on Abercorn around Stevenson in what is called Southside.  I believe the most often used motel is La Quinta (6805 Abercorn 912-355-3004).   From there you would drive north on Abercorn to Victory and turn right to go to Tybee.  Check with me for more details, or ask one of the Atlanta area birders who have done this a few times.

Skidaway Island State Park is an alternative for those who plan to camp.  If you stay there I can lead you or pick you up and take you to the dock.  Allow at least 45 minutes if you are not staying on Tybee.
